Cares for Kids visits the SOS Orphanage in Jamaica.

Phyllis Ballantini and Erica Wanous flew to Jamaica and visited the SOS Children’s Village in St. James. SOS is a private, nonpolitical and nondenominational welfare organization. Its purpose is to offer orphaned and abandoned children a permanent home and to prepare them for an independent life. The nine units that made up the orphanage were crowded and lacked any sort of cooling device making them extremely hot and nearly smothering, especially during the midsummer months. After visiting the orphanage, Phyllis and Erica drove back into town and purchased twenty cooling fans for every unit of the orphanage for the children and caregivers to keep them cool and make their living environment more enjoyable.
